العامل المسبب	فيروس الحصبة، من جنس الفيروسات الحصبية (Morbillivirus) ومن عائلة الفيروسات المخاطانية (Paramyxoviridae)
فترة الحضانة	10 أيام (من 7 الى 18 يومًا، وقد تصل إلى 21 يومًا)
فترة العدوى	من 4 أيام قبل الطفح الجلدي ولغاية 4 أيام بعد بداية الطفح
المستودع	الانسان
طرق الانتقال	- من شخص إلى شخص : الاتصال المباشر مع الرذاذ، ونادرًا الاتصال غير المباشر - عن طريق الهواء (في مكان مغلق)
العوارض السريرية	- طفح بقعي حطاطي (maculo-papular) حموي - المضاعفات : التهاب الأذن الوسطى (7-9%)، التهاب رئوي (1-6%)، التهاب معوي (8%) والتجفاف، فقدان البصر، التشنجات (1/200)، والتهاب الدماغ (1/1000) - التهاب الدماغ : التهاب الدماغ التالي للعدوى يظهر بعد أسبوع من بداية العوارض) أو التهاب الدماغ الحاد المتأخر (يظهر خلال أسابيع وأشهر بعد بداية العوارض) -المضاعفات طويلة المدى : التهاب الدماغ الشامل المصلب تحت الحاد (subacute sclerosing panencephalitis ) تظهر 7 سنوات أو أكثر من بداية العوارض (ونسبتها 1/25000 أو 1/8000 لحالات دون السنتين) نسبة الاماتة : 3-6% في البلدان النامية، 1-3/1000 في البلدان المتقدمة
