H1N1 a Seasonal Virus: The Moph Issues a List of Precautionary Steps

The Preventive Medical Service at the Ministry of Public Health noted that the influenza virus H1N1 has become part of the seasonal influenza since 2010.

In this context, the ministry mentioned the following:

  • The seasonal influenza is caused by viruses expected to appear and is characterized by the following symptoms: fever, severe respiratory symptoms such as coughing, throat and muscle pain, and sometimes vomiting and diarrhea. In case of complications, the patient is advised to seek medical help.
  • The virus is transmitted indirectly through coughs, sneezes and saliva. It can also be spread by contaminated hands when touching the mouth and nose.
  • If the patient is tested positive, the result does not mean that Oseltamivir (Flumivir- Tamiflu) should be taken for influenza, unless prescribed by the physician.
Prevention from the influenza and the acute respiratory infections

  • Wash your hands frequently with water and soap, in particular after coughing, sneezing and touching contaminated surfaces and tools
  • Practice cough and sneeze etiquette
  • Avoid contact with infected persons
  • Stay home when showing the symptoms of influenza
  • Avoid habits that help transmit the infection, such as shaking hands and kissing
  • Follow a healthy and balanced diet, drink lots of warm fluids and eat fruits that are rich in vitamin C
  • Keep nurseries and school clean
  • People at risk such as children, the elderly, patients with chronic diseases, pregnant women and health care providers are advised to take the seasonal influenza vaccine.
